He was predeceased by: his parents, John Grohl and Lorraine Grohl; his sister-in-law Barbara; and his niece Rebekah. He is survived by: his close friend Sarah Stiteler; his former wife Patricia; his sons, David (Julia) and Daniel (Ali); his grandchildren, Kimi, Keilani, Coral, Ethan and George; and his siblings, John, Lorraine and Peter (Heather).
