He was predeceased by: his parents, Dewey Mercier and Elberta May Mercier (Bushey); his son Walter Wayne Mercier, Jr.; and his siblings, Audrey, Donald and Frank.
He is survived by: his daughters, Peggy Laplante (John) of North Hero, Sherry Brier (Mark LaFlam) of Swanton, Cindy Shambo (Robert) of St. Albans and Sandy Letourneau (Allen) of Swanton. He is also survived by nine grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren.
