He was predeceased by: his parents, George "Leonard" Gates and Catherine Gates (Sprague); his wife Leona T. Gates (Davis); and his siblings, Hazel Turner, Lillian Snyder, Francis Gates, George Gates, Clifford Gates and Robert Gates.
He is survived by: his son Chester Gates Jr.; his daughter-in-law Lisa of Mt. Holly, VT; his daughter Nancy Stoner; his sons-in-law, John Stoner (Susan Stromberg) of Lowman, NY, Richard Stromberg (Kristin Swanson) of Putney, VT and Christopher Swanson of Troy, NY; and his siblings, Donald Gates of Mt Holly and Etta Kinette (Springfield). He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
