He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Dr. Sam Sparhawk, Jr. and Mary Sparhawk (Purington); his sister Mary Frances Graham (Sparhawk); his children, Jill Scott (William), Sam Sparhawk, IV (Barbara) and Jeff Sparhawk (Sue); his grandchildren, Kelly Spiegel (Michael), Sam Sparhawk (Victoria), Kristen Sparhawk, Stefani Mortimer, Justin Sparhawk, Margaret Scott and Annabel Scott; and also Riley Spiegel. He was also cherished by 3 children and helping with seven grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made in Sam's honor to: The Lake Champlain Committee, 208 Flynn Avenue Building #3, Studio 3F.

“It is with regret that we hear of Sam's passing. I came to know Sam and Wilma while working on boats with Pete Sparhawk and racing Sunfish. They were all mentors at Porter's Point to me as a college student. I will always cherish the memories and sailing acumen from that time at the Point. Fondly, Bob and Libbi Bergman”
