He was predeceased by: his son Alden. He is survived by: his parents, Charles Merritt and Thelma Merritt (Balch); his spouse Elizabeth "Betty" Pignato Oct; his grandfather Balch Trucking; his children, Robert Merritt of Springfield, Richard Merritt of Fayetteville, James Merritt of Charlestown and Carol Batchelder of Saxtons River; and his siblings, Cunred Merritt of Londonderry, Arthur Merritt of San Diego and Nancy Adams of North Adams. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
