He was predeceased by: his parents, Carl P. Messer and Dorothy Williamson Messer. He is survived by: his sister Carley Howe of Randolph Center; his nieces, Kelly Sammel (Roger) of Essex Junction and Krista Lobera (Fabian) of Lander; and his nephew Brett Howe of Colchester. He is also survived by four great-nieces and nephews.
