Charles Charkin Obituary

Charles Charkin 83, passed away with his loving family by this side on July 3, 2017 at the UVM Medical Center. He was born in Brooklyn, NY on May 29, 1934, the son of Nathan and Gertrude (Gellin) Charkin. However he spent all of his childhood in Wantagh, L.I., NY. Charles served in the U.S. Air Force as an electronics instructor during the Korean era.

He had worked for IBM for 33 years in many areas of the country and in many capacities, including management and liaison with Burlington, IBM and IBM World Trade. One of his great loves was Vermont and he always felt very fortunate to be living in our beautiful state. Charles was a wonderful, kind, "jack of all trades" to his neighbors, friends and, of course, he was devoted to his family.

He followed the code, "You should never hate anyone; it simply takes too much energy". Chuck and Linda were longtime members of Ohavi Zedek Synagogue. Chuck fulfilled the words of Rudyard Kipling: "…If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with Kings——nor lose the common touch…Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it.

And ——which is more—you'll be a Man, my son!" He was predeceased by his parents; a sister, Reva Ballon; and a brother, Murray Charkin. He was a beloved husband to his wife of 57 years, Linda (Taylor); a wonderful father to their daughters, Susan and her husband, Steve Selbst and their daughter, Rachel; Sheila and her husband, Greg Ward and their daughter, Tara.

Chuck and Linda also had a wonderful, special family, Ibrahim and Mina Alicic and their sons; and their very special neighbors and friends among whom were Ray and Joyce LeBlanc, Kathy Leahy and her late husband Bob, Dave and Diana Hall, Jason and Kara Stempek, Nel and Gloria Vezina and so many others. We were blessed to have so many people in our lives.

We would especially like to thank Greg and Sheila Ward for being not only our wonderful children but always being there for us. The family wishes to thank Dr. Martin LaWinter and his wonderful, nurse, Laura; Dr. Joseph Therriault and Dr. and Mrs. William Ryan. We feel blessed to have had the UVM Medical Center and all their caring, compassionate care.
