He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Lorraine Wilson and Rembert Earl Hayes; his wife Joan; his children, John, Jr. (Lisa), Lisa (Bill) and Brett (Kristi); and his sisters, Jean Crump and Darleen Evans. He was also cherished by 8 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
