David Lee Sutton Obituary

David Lee Sutton, 64, of York County Virginia, was called to Heaven on April 14, 2023, after a long illness. David was born in Newport News, Virginia on October 1, 1958. He grew up in Downtown Hampton and attended Hampton High School. As a teenager he started working for Grafton Garage (aka Grafton Dodge) in York County, Virginia, where he became a well-known mechanic in the area. He retired from Grafton after 27 years.

David was a devoted husband and father who loved his girls with everything he had. He never met a stranger and would talk to everyone. David always made you feel welcomed with his sense of humor that was like no other, especially when he started reminiscing. David enjoyed drag racing on the weekends and family vacations to Tennessee. Later in life, David enjoyed going on weekend car rides with Allison and stopping at every antique shop along the way. He also loved spending time with his three beautiful grandchildren, who he adored. His family was his world!

David is predeceased by his parents, Robert and Cleo Sutton-Garrett and Eustace Sutton, his brother Robert Terry Sutton, his in-laws, Bernard and Theresa Mears and brother-in-law William "Jeff" Bowlin.

David is survived by his wife of more than 43 years, Allison Sutton; daughter Jennifer Smith and her husband Daniel of Poquoson, VA; daughter Amanda Stassi and her husband Andy of Yorktown, VA; and his three grandchildren, Van and Chloe Smith and Kylee Barker-Stassi.

David is also survived by his sisters-in-law Margaret Clark, her husband Craig, their children Jessica King, Elizabeth Clark-Gomez and Devin Clark of Kill Devil Hills, NC; Stephanie Mears and her children Nicholas Mears, Natalie Motley and Emily Motley of Hampton, VA; Katherine Bowlin and her children Alexis Bowlin, Olivia Bowlin, and Max Bowlin of Kitty Hawk, NC; Samantha DeLucia, her husband John DeLucia, their children Jonathan DeLucia, Rebecca Vitullo, Hannah DeLucia and Jack DeLucia of Kitty Hawk, NC.; brothers-in-law, Stephen Mears, his wife Sharon Mears and their son Ethan Mears of Hampton, VA; B.J. Mears and his children Tyler Fe and Brandon Mears Torres of Oak Hill, VA; and Howard Mears of Manhattan, NY.

The family would like to thank the staff at Riverside Hospice for their wonderful care. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the York County Fire and Rescue or the Rheumatoid Arthritis Foundation by clicking HERE (https://www.helpfightra.org). The family will receive friends from 11:00 – 12:00 Noon on Friday, April 21, 2023, at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, 245 S. Armistead Ave in Hampton. Immediately following at Noon, a funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel. Interment will be in Parklawn Memorial Park.
