He was predeceased by: his parents, William Isaiah and Dorothy Smythe Zirkle; his grandparents, William Wade, Ada Alice Bowman Zirkle of Edinburg, Marion Augustus and Hattie Hutchinson Smythe of Roanoke; and his former wife Dagmar.

He is survived by: his grandchildren, Ensign Bowman Shaughnessy, Midshipman Tenney Shaughnessy, William, Andrew, Charles Carroll, Frances, Winsome, Chester and Isaac Zirkle; his sister Anne Pendleton Zirkle of Harrisonburg; his wife Ann Sweeney Zirkle; his stepdaughter Jennifer Smith Fary (Albert); and his grandchildren, Sloane and Alec Fary of BenAvon Heights.

Visitation was held on Sunday, February 9th 2025 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Dellinger Funeral Homes (159 N Main St, Woodstock, VA 22664). A funeral service was held on Monday, February 10th 2025 at 2:00 PM at the Bethel Lutheran Church (197 Bethel Church Rd, Edinburg, VA 22824).

If desired, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Bethel Lutheran Parish - Edinburg, and the Edinburg Volunteer Fire Department.
