He was predeceased by: his son Franklin Kenneth Vanderlaan; and his siblings, Piet, Pier, Gooitzen, Johannes van der Laan and Rika Elgersma.

He is survived by: his wife Rita Vanderlaan (Faber); his children, Peter William Vanderlaan of Virginia Beach, VA, John Theodore Vanderlaan (Terri) of Hertford, NC, Regina Irene Mansoor of Amherst, VA, Carol Ann Smallman (Sean) of Virginia Beach, VA, Timothy Andrew Vanderlaan (Angela) of Goldsboro, NC and Diane Elaine Joosse (Dan) of Chillicothe, OH; and his siblings, Remmelt van der Laan, Hessel van der Laan and Truus van der Meer. He is also survived by twenty eight grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
