With solemn hearts, we announce the passing of Rita M Brown of Winchester, Virginia, born in Washington, District of Columbia, whose presence will be deeply missed, having departed on February 1, 2025 at the age of 84. She was predeceased by: her parents, James Oliver Thomas and Cora Jackson Cockrell; her husband Benjamin F. Brown; her siblings, Doris Gryder, Ann Ruddy, Chester Thomas, Joseph Thomas, Richard Thomas and Herbert Koch; and her foster daughter Tonya Dillow.
She is survived by: her children, Charles R. McCoy of Winchester, Rhonda C. Hott of Winchester and Ben Brown of Inwood, WV; her stepdaughter Beverly Reed of Winchester; and her sister Charlotte Hall of Oxen Hill, MD.. She is also survived by eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held on Thursday, February 6th 2025 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Jones Funeral Home - Winchester (228 S Pleasant Valley Rd, Winchester, VA 22601). A funeral service was held on Friday, February 7th 2025 at 11:00 AM at the same location. A burial was held on Friday, February 7th 2025 at 2:00 PM at the Sperryville Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Rita's name to Blue Ridge Hospice at 333 W Cork Street Winchester, VA 22601.
