He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Albert Powell and Harriet Powell; his brother Sonny; his sons, Danny and Jon; his siblings, JoAnne, Harriet and Jimmy; his former wife Nancy; his grandchildren, Isiah, Layla, Lily and Sadie; and also Jessica. He was also cherished by numerous brother and sister in laws, cousins, nieces and nephews; and extended family.

During his contributions to the space program, Elmer married and relocated to Colorado Springs, Colorado where he raised his family in the beautiful Rocky Mountains.
