“Dear Joan & Family - Joan may remember the pilgrimage I made to your Williamsburg home 7 yrs ago to pay homage to my 1st USMC Inf Co Commander. Then Captain Kelley was commanding M Co, 3/4 in Okinawa, the same Co he commanded in Vietnam, 6 yrs prior. You also had my wife and I to your J'ville NC home for dinner. You were both so kind & generous. Edwin Kelley was the nicest, toughest Marine I ever knew. I am very sad to see him go. We shall all see him again on the other side! Jeff Cole”

Then Lieutenant Colonel Ed Kelley took us back to Beirut, Lebanon, and importantly, brought us all back again. He was a kind, wise, and insightful commander who challenged us by his high example, firm grasp of priorities, and unflappable demeanor. We followed him out of respect and love, not mere rank.
