He was predeceased by: his father Joseph Benjamin; his daughter Vivian Scales-Wilson; and his siblings, Lillian M. Wilson, Joseph A. Scales, Sr., Jessie L. Scales, Sr., David Scales, Sr., Albert J. Scales, Sr., Clyde E. Scales, Sr. and Oscar A. Scales Sr..
He is survived by: his wife Mary A. Scales; his children, Nina Hines (Arthur), Carl Leroy Scales Jr. (Vanessa), Carolyn Amos (Dwight), Jacqueline Gray (John), Amy Rucker (Kimp), Jamie Lee Scales and Cerasalind Scales-Gray (Jermaine); his brothers, Kenny Scales (Georgia) and James Scales (Irene); and his siblings-in-law, Donnie Stuckey (Melissa) and Brenda Taylor. He is also survived by thirty grandchildren; fifty-four great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other loving relatives, and caring friends.
He later relocated to Williamsburg, VA, where he worked as a Bellhop and Room Service Attendant for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.
