“Emily and John...I'm so sorry about your Mom but what a blessed life she had. And to live to 98! I'm so glad I got to see her at Mary Francis's 100th birthday party! She looked the same and so beautiful! I'll never forget your home on Independence...I think about it often when I pass by. My son, Scott, has 2 plots at Rosewood. It's a beautiful cemetery. If I can do anything, please don't hesitate to call ..Chris Alexander (Smiley's daughter) 757-642-4959”

Debi Schaefer wrote a sympathy message

“Emily, John and your families, I was so sorry to hear about the passing of your Mother. Grateful that I got to sit next to her and chat at the luncheon for my Mother a few years ago. I can still see your house on Independence Blvd, John, Emily and a horse. We wish you all much peace, love and joy always. Bill & Debi Schaefer”
