He was predeceased by: his parents, James Sherman Shumate and Vallie Shumate (Reavis); his brothers, Bernie and Ralph Shumate; and his brother-in-law John Myers.

He is survived by: his wife Sandra M. Shumate; his children, Clayton, Nina (Jimmy Fortune), Lynn (Keith Allen), Christy (Troy Herring) and Wendy (Shawn Harris); his grandchildren, Nicole, Kenny Shumate, Rebecca, Dakota, Keith, Erin, Zac, Danielle, Allen, Hannah, Bobby Kolpack, Creed, Jade, Casen Herring, Carrie, Lane and Kyle Harris; his great grandchildren, Bre, Leah, Emily Allen and Abel Kolpack; his sisters, Suzy Myers and Donna; and his friends, Vickie Shifflett and Gerald Shifflett.
