He was predeceased by: his parents, John Updike and Clara Updike of Washington, VA.; his brother Kelley; his son Glenn Hartwell, Jr.; and his nephew Justin Updike.
He is survived by: his wife Lynda Thorpe Updike; his children, Lee John Updike of Texas, Kelley L. Updike (Rick) of Florida and Jennifer U. Cuthbertson (Anthony) of Statesville; his grandchildren, Hart, Sawyer Updike, David, Emily and Jenna Cuthbertson; and his brothers, Randall (Toni), Lyle (late Joan) and Francis (Susan). He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
