He was predeceased by: his parents, Thomas Joseph Coates and Annie Elizabeth Lee Coates; his grandson Wade Coates; and his siblings, Harrison Coates, Sam Coates, David Coates, Robert Coates, Lucy Thurston, Violet Mozingo, Lizzy Webb and Katie Sanford.

He is survived by: his children, Gary Coates (Shirley) of Callao, Ronnie Coates of Warsaw and Lisa Steeley (James Blevins) of Mechanicsville; and his sisters, Thelma O'Bier of Lancaster, Alice Swann of Callao and Annie Gray Douglas of Callao. He is also survived by 4 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren.

The family has asked for donations to be made in honor of Tommy to Jerusalem Baptist Church.
