He was predeceased by: his parents, Adrian Jackson Motley, Sr. and Jessie Ferguson Motley; and his siblings, Ruth Elizabeth Motley, Nancy Motley Terry (Wesley) and A. J. Motley (Josephine).

He is survived by: his wife Elaine Hupp; and his children, Allyn Beth and Nelson, Jr.. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and in addition two grand-nieces and one grand-nephew.
