He was predeceased by: his parents, Emory Gray and Madeline Gray; and his brother Clifford Owens. He is survived by: his wife Penny M. Gray; his stepchildren, Laura L. Hodges of Rocky Mount, Michelle M. Robinson of Crewe, Susan Stearnes of Blackstone, Ray Millner of Charlottesville and William E. Robinson of Blackstone; and his siblings, Wanda Mayton (Norman), Susie Johnston, Donna Gray of Keysville and David Gray (Peggy) of Keysville. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and special nephew.
