He was predeceased by: his parents, Charles Albert Bates Jr. and Sue Barnes Bates; and his son Charles Albert "Al" Bates IV. He is survived by: his wife Geneva Womack Bates of Vernon Hill; his children, Richard W. "Ricky" Bates of Vernon Hill and Susan B. McLamb (Chuck); his grandsons, Richard W. "Ric" Bates Jr. (Rhonda) and Charles A. "Chuck" Bates V; his great grandchildren, Cooper, Ginger Rogers, Maylee M. Bates and Hattie E. Bates of Alton; and his brother Robert W. Bates (Helen) of Vernon Hill.
