He was predeceased by: his parents, Margaret Klingler Ruhlen and George A. Ruhlen; his brother Franklin; and his son Chris. He is survived by: his wife Janice Weaver Ruhlen; his daughters, Julie Ruhlen of Winchester, Virginia and Jennifer Ruhlen Bavisotto of Fairfax, Virginia; and his sisters, Kathleen Ruhlen of Lima and Margene Reed. He is also survived by six grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
