He was predeceased by: his parents, Harry Franklin and Anna Elizabeth Painter; his son Clydus S. Painter; and his brothers, R. F. "Dick" Painter, Glenn E. "Jack" Painter and Douglas Painter.
He is survived by: his wife Mollie Kathryn Bly Painter of Toms Brook, VA; his children, James Painter, Jr. (Jill) of Chester, VA and Judy Orndorff (late Jack Orndorff); and his grandson William "Will" Orndorff (Tori).
