He was predeceased by: his parents, Fred Thomas and Mattie Cordle Shelton of Virginia; his wife Edna Lovell Shelton; and his siblings, Anna Mae Dye, Doris Mae Proffitt, Shirley Annajean Dye, Melvin Shelton and George "Buck" Shelton.
He is survived by: his son Joe William Shelton, Jr. (Shelly) of Raven, VA; his siblings, Mary Rose of Richlands, VA, Patsy Leveling of Swords Creek, VA and Jeff Shelton of Richlands, VA; his grandchildren, Joe William "Will" Shelton, III, Kendra Flinchum (Eric) and Haley Shelton; and his great grandchildren, London Shea, Maci Shelton and Kaleb Baugh.
