He was predeceased by: his parents, Claude Swanson and Nealy Atkins Martin; and his siblings, Fern Martin Holder and Wiley Clarence Martin. He is survived by: his wife Ivylyn Sparger Martin; his daughters, Gail Martin Shelton (Johnny) and Joy Martin Richardson (Ricky); and his grandchildren, Christy Shelton, Jonathan Shelton, Sara Richardson and Cole Richardson.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Beulah Community Center, 5012 West Pine Street, Mount Airy, North Carolina 27030 or a charity of the donor's choice.
