He is survived by: his wife Virginia Bates (Wildermuth); his daughter Naomi S. Bates (Sarah); his grandchildren, Daniel E. Hicks, Susie R. and Nyla R. Bates; and his siblings, Douglas Bates and Emily Clancy. He is also survived by Nephews and a niece.
