He was predeceased by: his parents, Leonard F. Gitchell and Mary Violet Butt; his stepfather Phil Butt; and his brother-in-law John A Closson. He is survived by: his wife Sue Anne Godden-Gitchell; his children, Leonard Gregory Gitchell, II (Melissa Lynn Morris) and Jennifer Anne Gitchell (Justin Allen Rusmisel); his grandchildren, Jarrett Francis, Arielle Gitchell, Sierra Gitchell, Gregory Camden, Jackson Rusmisel and Taden Rusmisel; his great grandchildren, Jace Francis, Brantley Sprouse and Serenity Francis; his siblings, Mary Closson, Deanna Ditto, Laura Machin, Dennis Chamberlain, Duane Chamberlain and Ted Chamberlain; and his siblings-in-law, Mathew Godden and Lois Mullet.
