He was predeceased by: his parents, John E. Atwell and Cynthia Bradley Atwell; his wife Linda Diane Atwell; and his son Curt E. Atwell. He is survived by: his granddaughter Lillian N. Atwell; his great grandchild Ember Rose Atwell; and his siblings, John E. Atwell Jr. (Sharon) of Pembroke, VA, Carol Watson and Katherine Heller (Mark) of Jacksonville, FL. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorials may be made in memory of Gene to the Lebanon Church North Shenandoah Ruritan Club.
