It is with great sadness that we announce the death of LtCol Daniel A. Schmitt in Stafford, Virginia, who passed away on July 24, 2024, at the age of 52, leaving to mourn family and friends. He is survived by: his granddaughter Lyla Mainz; his fiancé Valeriya Knight; his partner's daughter Paulina Adrian Knight; his mother Karen Schmitt; his siblings, David Schmitt, Sue Stottlemyer, Julie Elking, Bernard Schmitt, Michael Schmitt, Catherine Collins, Ann Schmitt, Emily Howard, Mary Sizemore, Margaret French, Lucy Kostelny, Jacob Schmitt and Matthew Schmitt; and also, Adam Schmitt, Elizabeth Mainz (Blaine), William Schmitt and Sophia Schmitt.

“so sorry for your loss! Very heartbreaking news to say the least. He was my last Platoon Commander before I retired in Dec 1996 for 81 Mortars 1/6 Hard! enjoyed every minute I spent with Dan. One of the top two Marine Officers I had the privilege of working with. will always remember last talk I had with him when he took command of 3rd Bn 6th Marines ! time goes by too fast and I regret never getting back in touch with him. I truly miss him because he was my friend, an outstanding Marine!”
