He was predeceased by: his mother Mary Garnes; and his siblings, Sallie Ann Garnes, Alice May Gill, Louise Jackson, Helen Whittle and Edward.
He is survived by: his children, Sylvia Wyman of South Hill, Virginia, Alvin Garnes Jr. and Ivory Garnes of Dillwyn, Virginia; his cousin Deacon John Eddie Jackson; and also Nannie Thompson of South Hill, Virginia.. He is also survived by five grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren.
