He was predeceased by: his wife Dorothy Mae Hicks; his sons, Nathaniel, James, Jr. and Darnell; his siblings, Henry Lewis Hicks, Sr., Norfleet 'Jimbo Hicks, Arthur Junior Hicks, Shirley Mae Broady and Ivory Pearl 'Blake Hicks; and his daughter-in-law Rita Hicks.
He is survived by: his children, Dennis Hicks (Elvin), Melvin Hicks, Randal Hicks, Ricky Hicks, Patricia Hicks (Terry) and Terri Epps; his siblings, Dorothy Hicks, Ollie Hicks, Carolyn H. Carter (Solomon), Roberts Hicks, John Hicks and Waverly Hicks (Emma); his daughter-in-law Annette Hicks; his sisters-in-law, Iris Hicks, Betty Hicks, Ellen Clayton and Ann Smith; and his friend Geraldine Walton. He is also survived by grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
