He was predeceased by: his parents, Garnett Athey and Annie Athey; his wife Barbara Overbay Athey; and his son Gary Lee Athey. He is survived by: his son David Athey (Robbie) of Marion; and his sister Jody Prater (Robert) of Saltville.
Visitation was held on Monday, January 13th 2025 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Henderson Funeral Home (148 E Main St, Saltville, VA 24370). A funeral service was held on Monday, January 13th 2025 at 8:00 PM at the same location. A committal service was held on Tuesday, January 14th 2025 at 12:00 PM at the Knollkreg Memorial Park (566 Walden Rd NE, Abingdon, VA 24210).
