He was predeceased by: his parents, James Howard and Alma Kestner; and his siblings, Bobby, Claude "Beans", Martin and Bessie Kestner.
He is survived by: his significant other Nioka Frye; his children, Gary (Donna), Jeff (Beth), Carolyn, Melissa and Daniel Kestner (Alison); the mother of his children Juanita Kestner; and his sisters, Wilma Bradley (David), Mary Francis Blevins (Buddy), Lois Taylor (Roy) and Chris Griffitts. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
