He was predeceased by: his daughter Melissa Thomas; and his siblings, Buddy Thomas, Willie Thomas and Sue Wiener. He is survived by: his wife Jean Anne Thomas; his children, Bridget Austin, James L. Thomas, Jr. and Anthony W. Thomas; his grandchildren, Christopher Thomas, Shannon Thomas, Brian Austin and Luke Thomas; and his siblings, Mary Ellen Satterwhite, Robin Wright, Elizabeth Jenkins and Curtis Thomas. He is also survived by six great-grandchildren.
