She was predeceased by: her parents, John McCombs and Martha McCombs; her husband Richard Lee Staples; and her brother Jack. She is survived by: her children, Richard Adam Staples (Gretchen) and Wendy Staples Sneed; and her grandchildren, Ian Staples and Ellie Sneed.
In 1998, she returned to live in Virginia Beach where she volunteered at the Virginia Aquarium as a docent and at Back Bay Restoration Foundation as a tram driver.
