He was predeceased by: his parents, James Proffitt and Lillian Proffitt. He is survived by: his wife Gonzalee Turman Proffitt; his sister Helen Slaughter; his sons, James Proffitt III and David Proffitt; his daughters-in-law, Tammy Smith and Jennifer Proffitt; his grandchildren, Dylan Roberts, Cody Roberts and Katelyn Proffitt; and his great grandchild Arianna Roberts.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in his memory to Goochland Baptist Church at 2454 Manakin Rd, Manakin-Sabot, Va. 23103.
