He was predeceased by: his parents, Alfred V. Smith and Anniebelle Eanes Smith; and his sister Phyllis Hall. He is survived by: his wife Charlene Miller Smith; his children, Shannon Denene Hannon (Peter), Russell Smith, Cassondra "Cassie" Winfrey (Cory) and Stacie Smith; his grandchildren, Madison Grace Smith, Mikinzi Jo Winfrey, Raven Lea Winfrey and Kahlan Skye Winfrey; his brother Rodger Smith; his mother-in-law Carmell Miller; and his pet Charlee. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

The family suggests that donations be made to the VFW, National Coalition for Homeless Veterans, or UVA Cancer Research for Kids.
