She was loved and cherished by many people including: her husband Howard "Rick" Rukenbrod Jr.; her daughter Trina Gardner (Terry); her grandchildren, Jessica McCraw (Richard) and Nicholas Gardner (Shannon); and her great grandchildren, Mackenzie, Conor, Liam and Henry.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations in Elayne's name to Little Sisters of the Poor, Richmond, Va., or to the Pediatric Congenital Heart Association.
