He was predeceased by: his wife Edith Kitts Hanks; his stepdaughter Louise Thrasher; and his sisters, Alene Goad and Geneva Richardson. He is survived by: his daughter Cathy Hanks; and his siblings, Una Lee Brewer, Veda Williams, Sally Ratcliffe and Elmer Hanks (Christine). He is also survived by nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews; and many wonderful friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Church of the Brethren, Pulaski, Va.
