He was predeceased by: his parents, Thurman Doyal Akins and Willie Jones Mell. He is survived by: his wife Catherine Quintard Ashby Akins; his children, C. Shepherd Akins (Shannon), John J. Akins (Angie), Catherine (Katie) and Bredemeier (Dennis); his grandchildren, Elizabeth A. Akins, Camden J. Painter, Christina, Charlie Bredemeier and Shelby A. Akins; his stepgrandchildren, Hannah, Ryan and Brendan; and his great grandchildren, Saylor and Daniel.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the St. Jude Children's Hospital, or Plant a Tree.
