He was predeceased by: his parents, James Samuel Gillespie, Sr. and Elizabeth Zeigler Gillespie; his wife Lucy Brett Campbell; and his son James Samuel Gillespie, III. He is survived by: his friends, Brian, Camillus, Curt and Mike; his sister Sarah Gillespie Seale (Pep Seale); his daughters, Elizabeth Gillespie McRae and Ann Brett Gillespie Strickland; his sons-in-law, Steve and Sam; and his granddaughters, Katherine Elizabeth McRae, Campbell Suzanne Strickland, Lucy Caroline McRae, Sarah Elizabeth Strickland, Charlotte Olivia Strickland and Nora-Ann Gillespie Strickland.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Jim Sam Gillespie III scholarship through the VMI Keydet Club, Legacy Hospice and Palliative Care, or the Virginia Cooperative Extension 4-H.
