He was predeceased by: his wife Ruth Elizabeth Cary Tompkins; his son Stephen Tompkins; his parents, Joseph Arthur and Ruth Powell Tompkins; his brothers, Joseph Tompkins, Langston Tompkins and George Fleming; his cousin Calvin Powell; and his friend Christine Baker.
He is survived by: his children, Michael Tompkins (Mary) of Chesterfield, VA, Stanley Tompkins (Jamita) of Aubrey, TX and Deborah Tompkins Johnson (Reuben); his grandchildren, Alexis Tompkins, Crystal Tompkins, Nathaniel Tompkins and Kyndal Tompkins; his great grandchild Reigna McKenzie; his sisters-in-law, Jeanette Tompkins of Petersburg, VA and Elnora Tompkins of Montross, VA; his cousins, Shirley Powell of Washington, DC, Kathy Powell Dickson of Bethesda, MD and Judy Powell Bailey of Colonial Heights, VA; his brother-in-law Ivory Cary of Petersburg, VA; his friends, Mary Nelson, Alice and Maurice Bowles; and also Reuben. He is also survived by five great grandchildren.
