He was predeceased by: his wife Bobbie Brown Monk Gilbert; his parents, Fred Howard Gilbert and Bess Bandy Gilbert; his stepson Gilmer Eugene "Gene" Monk; and his pets, Heidi, Cocoa and Foxy.
He is survived by: his children, Bess Gilbert Domanski (Frank) of Penhook, VA, Marcus Gilbert (Mary) of Roanoke, VA, Clyde Leslie "Les" Monk (Cynthia) of Burkes Garden, VA and Cathy Lymburner (Rick) of Amherst, VA; and his grandchildren, Bridgette Patrick Keene, John Patrick, Morgan Patrick, Callie Gilbert Cook, Jarrod Monk, Gary Cole Jr., Eric Cole, Gilmer Monk Jr. and Clarrisa Monk Chambers. He is also survived by several great grandchildren.
