He was predeceased by: his wife Betsy Ross Barker Knighton; his children, Melinda Katherine Knighton and Roderick Steve Knighton; and his siblings, Jack Knighton, Lyle Knighton, Avis Knighton Queen, Janice Knighton Sengstack and Engineer.
He is survived by: his sons, John Michael Knighton of St. Petersburg, Paul Greiner Knighton (Brenda) of Lutz and Jeffrey Thomas Knighton (Anita) of Sterling; and his grandchildren, Daniel Knighton, Jason Martin, Talbot Knighton, Samuel Knighton, Dillon Knighton, Benjamin Knighton and Erica Haire. He is also survived by four great-grandchildren.
