He was predeceased by: his parents, William Stevens Matthews and Dora Lee Roberts Matthews; his nephew Ricky Slaughter; and his sons-in-law, Timothy Lohr and Ronnie Whitbeck.
He is survived by: his wife Joanne Weakley Matthews of Orange; his children, Teresa Whitbeck of Louisa, Melissa McDaniel (P. D. Foltz) of Orange and Robert McDaniel of Orange; his grandchildren, Jason Lohr (Sarah), Drew Hummill and Jenna Hummill; his sister Jo Ann Slaughter of Gordonsville; his nieces, Beverly Speed and Amy Penton; and his nephew Bruce Slaughter. He is also survived by four great grandchildren.
