He was predeceased by: his parents, Carroll Wilson Gay and Daisy Virginia Floyd Gay; his sister Elaine Spitzer; his son Carroll Gay; and his stepgrandson Caleb Smith.

He is survived by: his wife Mirdza Gay; his stepchildren, Pam Smith (Gary), Elby Barden, Jr. (Debbie), Terry Barden (Karen) and Mark Barden (Janet Lacy); his grandchildren, Kimberly, Hannah, Maggie, Daisy Jo, Olivia, Justin, Christy, Eric, Kelsey, Erin and Ian; and his great grandchildren, Courtney, Chadwick, Annabelle, Audrey, Michael, Elin, Eversen, Clay, Ledger, Callie and Paityn.
