He was predeceased by: his parents, John D. Matthews, Sr. and Myrtle Brinn Matthews; and his grandson David Waue. He is survived by: his wife Penny Hawkins Matthews; his sons, David E. "Butch" Matthews (Debbie) of Virginia Beach and Damon D. Matthews (Cynthia) of Cashville; his granddaughters, Amber Matthews, Kristin Riddick (Coley) and Emily Matthews; and his great grandchildren, William Matthews, Nathan Waue, Natalie Waue, Charlotte Riddick and Ella Riddick. He is also survived by five nieces and nephews.
