He was predeceased by: his parents, Elbert Kern and Norma Gardner Kern; his wife Alma Faye Mullis Kerns; and his siblings, Betty Foster, Jerome Kern and Wayne Kern.
He is survived by: his children, Teresa Ratliff (Rick) of Abingdon, Michelle Watts (James) of Blountville, Vicky Jackson (Tommy) of Coeburn and Vernon Q. Kerns, Jr. (Kimberly) of Wise; and his siblings, Mildred Mullis of Norton, Jean Blankenship (Bill) of Norton, Alice Chandler (Radford), Richard Kern of Wise and Steve Kern of Norton. He is also survived by seven grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren.
