He was predeceased by: his parents, James Joseph Stump, Sr. and Mary Hunt Stump; his former wife Joyce Howze Stump; and his sons, James Joseph Stump III and Herbert Howze Stump.
He is survived by: his wife Anna Tucker Stump; his daughter Patricia Stump Mays of Norton, VA; his brother Judge J. Robert Stump (Alice) of Norton, VA.; his nieces, Mary Beth Stump of Norton and Melissa Stump Bowman (Brad) of Norton; his stepdaughters, Martha Barker and Tamara Hahn; his grandsons, Billy Mays (Brooke) and Greg Mays (Ashley); his stepgrandchildren, Ryan Herrmann and Amy Herrmann; and his sons, Anthony, Jeffrey and Knoxville.
